Surgery for sweating

Is there surgery to treat excess sweating?

Yes, in the last two decades, sympathectomy has been performed to treat sweating in the palms and axilla. The procedure is done using a scope inserted into your chest and is relatively short in duration. Of course, you need to have a competent surgeon. Recovery is fast and you will notice the sweating decrease in a few weeks. For the next several months, you will remain dry.

Now the negative. Whenever thoracic sympathectomy is done, you will experience what is called compensatory sweating; this is just as bad as what you had before, and no treatment will affect it.

Therefore, some surgeons prefer to do the procedure on both sides of the chest. The procedure is also expensive and there is no guarantee it will work. Most people however, do see a reduction in sweat.
