What is Tinea?

My doctor says I have a fungal infection of my skin. Can you explain to me what is tinea?

There are several types of fungus which affect the skin. Tinea corporis is a ringworm which affects the superficial skin. The other name for tinea corporis is ringworm because of the typical itchy circular rash. Tinea corporis is very closely related to other superficial skin infections like athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris) and ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis). One typical feature of all superficial fungal infections is that they all cause persistent itching and a red rash. Fungal infection of skin is often misdiagnosed and treated as eczema or dermatitis.
