Achilles tendon rehab

After an Achilles tendon rupture and repair, physical therapy is vital. The physical therapy is usually delayed until the healing is complete. The type of rehabilitation is dependent on what type of treatment was offered to the patient. In any case, rehabilitation is offered to all patients.

Aggressive physical therapy is the key to recovery. Once the cast is removed, the ankle is gently massaged and passive movements are undertaken. After 2-3 weeks of passive exercises, active physical therapy is undertaken to restore mobility and strength of the ankle. Most experts recommend at least 12-18 weeks of active physical therapy to get the optimal results.

The time of return back to the original life style is dependent on motivation and quality of rehabilitative exercises.
