Can metformin cause sleepiness?
Metformin very rarely cause lactic acidosis, which can present with abdominal pain, nausea, and lethargy. However, just sleepiness is not an adverse effect of metformin. In any case, I would recommend you get the lactic acid levels measures first. The sedation could be from many other causes.
